4 Ginuray
Dirty dry martini, stirred with extra olives. I wash the ice in vermouth, just the tiniest bit, add brine from the olives and gin, of course. Not for every day, but my favourite way to drink gin. Made with Bombay Sapphire. And yes, I can put a cocktail umbrella in a martini if I want to!

3 Ginuary
Tanqueray and tonic with lime. Yes, awfully similar to yesterday, but I wanted to taste test between Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire. They are my two “everyday” gins, alternated based on which is on special. The taste test proved my preference for Bombay. Tanqueray is a drier gin with a tart finish, while Bombay feels softer with more defined botanical flavours. Yes, I am aware I sound...

2 Ginuary
Bombay Sapphire and tonic with fresh lime. I may have gone too early with my favourite, but I’ll be more creative tomorrow.

1 Ginuary
Last night my gorgeous friend Ray sent me a link to Ginuary which of course excited me very much. I misread the instructions last night, hardly surprising, thought it involved drinking a different gin every day, which seemed quite challenging. Turns out it’s much more freestyle, but I like the of gin a different way every day. Much more manageable.  I am under prepared for day one, no gin...

On underwear, policing fantasy and perversity
Not so long ago there was a bit of an uproar on Twitter about some highly inappropriate underwear being sold for girls. Knickers with slogans like CALL ME and I <3 RICH BOYS, completely inappropriate in size 6 underpants. Any rational person would agree and Kmart rightly took them off their shelves. The fact they sold them in the first place is mind boggling, but they did the right thing in the...

The Letter
Here is an example of a letter you can send to companies who advertise on Channel Nine. You can copy and paste this into a document, or use it as a guide to write your own letter. Please note that I have used respectful language, not made any personal attacks, or referred to any specific incidents. I think this is the most effective approach. [your name] [address] [suburb, state,...

On Rape, Rage and Channel Nine
So if you are reading this, I’m sure you’ve come across this story. Pretty disgusting, but hey, he’s a fool, you wouldn’t expect much. Then came this. Pay particular attention to the final two paragraphs, where Channel Nine clarifies KAK’s comments by saying the responsibility “cuts both ways with this kind of thing.” “The responsibility lies with the girls as well as with the guys when...

The Response from my Local Member...
…well her office manager anyway. For those playing at home I sent this letter to my local member on the Monday after the election. Yesterday I got this response: Hello Elly Welcome to the electorate the Greens and Julia Gillard have signed off on an agreement this morning for support for Labor, it covers most of what you have asked Janelle and you may not know being new to the electorate...

On Public Health, Prudes and Hashtags
I thought long and hard before I wrote this. I’m breaking my cardinal rule of the internet, don’t take anything on Twitter seriously, but this has got to me and I feel like my opinion is being misunderstood. There has been a campaign on Twitter to encourage women to self examine to screen for breast cancer, something I am TOTALLY in favour of, I am incredibly passionate about educating women about...

On anonymity and criticism
So, I haven’t posted in months, now 2 in 1 day! But lots of interesting things have been happening. This morning there was a bit of a kerfuffle on Twitter about anonymous bloggers and tweeters criticising election coverage without identifying themselves. I feel I need to declare that I have met the blogger know as Grogs Gamut and I find the blogger know as Grogs Gamut a delightful person and an...

My letter to my local member
Dear Janelle, Congratulations on retaining the seat of Page with an increased majority. I am new to the electorate, but have heard nothing but praise for you as a local member and this seems to be reinforced by your increased majority, against the general direction of the nation-wide swing. Obviously, it will be while a until we know who will claim government, possibly not even until parliament...

Tony Abbott in conversation with Annabel Crabb
Tony Abbott: As a journalist I was a frustrated politician. As a politician I am a frustrated journalist. Annabel Crabb: What were you as a priest? Tony Abbott: I was just frustrated! So I paid my money and went to see Annabel Crabb *swoon* and Tony Abbott *hmmmmm* in conversation about Battlelines, the latter’s manifesto, at the Sydney Writers’ Festival. What I was hoping for was a...

10 Short Sentences
I live alone in an inner city terrace. I have water views. My mornings are caffeine; my evenings are wine. I live though my iPhone. I complain about how many emails I get. I do my grocery shopping at Fratelli Fresh. I have a gay best friend. I say things like “when life is less hectic I will finish my Masters”. I work with semi famous people. When did I turn into such a wanker?

If Only I Had a Filter Between My Mouth and My...
On Friday I had a job interview. It was a very lovely job interview, with two delightful people on the panel (one of whom I already knew), for a simply superb job that I desperately want. The man I did not know on the panel asked me how their organisation could reach a particular demographic. I said “Give me the job and I’ll show you.” Yeah. Somehow think I will not be getting...

The Artist's Way Part II.i
I was going to delete those first three posts, because, well, it was a failed experiment, but that would just be lying to myself. So they will stay as a reminder of my inability to commit to seeing something through unless I am forced to.

The Artist's Way Part I.i
This tricking myself into doing the programme failed spectacularly. I’m too clever for myself. Though last week was a strange week due to travel and nervous excitement, so I’m going to be gentle with myself, forgive myself, and start this week. And hope for the best! Actually, no, I will not hope for the best, I will make a committment to do it because I believe it is important. There! See! I can...

The Artist's Way Part I
For the past 2 years or so I have trying to commit to completing The Artists’ Way. It is a hugely popular creative rehabilitation programme by Julia Cameron. My aunt, a wonderful artist and creator of Visual Medicine, insisted that I buy it for myself at her expense for Christmas a few years ago (she lives in London, so that is not quite as strange as it sounds). For those familiar with the...
