On underwear, policing fantasy and perversity

Not so long ago there was a bit of an uproar on Twitter about some highly inappropriate underwear being sold for girls. Knickers with slogans like CALL ME and I <3 RICH BOYS, completely inappropriate in size 6 underpants. Any rational person would agree and Kmart rightly took them off their shelves. The fact they sold them in the first place is mind boggling, but they did the right thing in the end.

Off the back of this I noticed a tweet declaring that Bra ‘n’ Things supports pedophilia with a link to this ”Teacher’s Pet” outfit. This really annoyed me. This is an adult lingerie shop that openly advertises that it sells fantasy and fetish wear. The model is clearly well past puberty, looks to be in her 20s to me. This is not comparable to a family department store selling sexually explicit underwear to children.

The reality is adults have sexual kinks and perversions,  just because your kink is not my kink doesn’t make yours wrong. As long as fantasies are lived out between consenting adults there is no need to police them, and this sort of moral panic makes us all look like the boy who cried wolf when we point out truly inappropriate sexualisation of children.
