My letter to my local member

Dear Janelle,

Congratulations on retaining the seat of Page with an increased majority. I am new to the electorate, but have heard nothing but praise for you as a local member and this seems to be reinforced by your increased majority, against the general direction of the nation-wide swing.

Obviously, it will be while a until we know who will claim government, possibly not even until parliament sits again to test whatever deal is brokered with The Greens and the independents, but in the meantime I image there will be a lot of soul searching within your party and considering of what went wrong and how you can “move forward”.

Given the swing against the ALP nation-wide was 4.87%, with just 1.2% of that going to the Coalition, and 3.63% to The Greens, I think it is fair to say Australia has swung to the left in this election. I think Australia has made it clear that we want a fairer, cleaner and more compassionate Australia.

So this is my question, will the ALP concede the left to The Greens and continue to race the Coalition to the bottom on issue like asylum seekers, climate change and equal marriage, or will the ALP recognise that Australia wants a major party, one who can win government in its’ own right, which will show genuine compassion for asylum seekers, instead of fear mongering in Western Sydney? Will you commit to swift and effective measures to address climate change, not a CPRS that lets Australian families take on the responsibility of reducing emissions while big business continues to pollute? Will you fight for the equal marriage laws that the vast majority of Australians support? Or will you continue to pander to the whims of right wing Christian lobby groups?

Please know that I ask this with the greatest of respect. I am a former ALP staffer, but I am devastated and disillusioned with the path this party has taken in this election.

I look forward to your detailed and timely response.

Kind regards,

Elly Michelle Clough
