On anonymity and criticism

So, I haven’t posted in months, now 2 in 1 day! But lots of interesting things have been happening.

This morning there was a bit of a kerfuffle on Twitter about anonymous bloggers and tweeters criticising election coverage without identifying themselves. I feel I need to declare that I have met the blogger know as Grogs Gamut and I find the blogger know as Grogs Gamut a delightful person and an especially insightful blogger.

My 2 passions in life are politics and theatre, I am lucky enough to work in theatre. In the theatre people are paid to criticise our work. In fact many of the critics get paid more than the performers. Some of them use pen names and blog anonymously. And you know want? I don’t care who they are! I want intelligent, insightful analysis of our work which challenges us to do better and really think about our choices. Robust criticism is an essential part of our industry. Don’t get me wrong, no one wants a bad review, and when a review is unfair and unfounded we may get a bit antsy, but we live with it, and embrace it and learn from it.

I think that the analysis of the election campaign by the blogger known as Grogs Gamut is some of the best going around. I would like to see journalists listening to what the blogger known as Grogs Gamut has to say and accepting the challenge to be better and more robust, instead on harping on about anonymity.
